ATTENDANCE POLICY

     A student's contribution to his/her education is directly related to attendance.  Both students and parents must understand that students miss a vital portion of their education when they do not attend classes.

            While we allow students to do written work to make-up classes, we must realize that class instruction and presentations, discussions, audiovisual presentations, and student-teacher interaction can never be made up.

            With this in mind and the need to have a formal attendance policy, the following will outline the JVC attendance policy.

            After a student is absent from any class during a semester:

            4 times - a form letter will be mailed to the parents stating this fact.  It will stress the correlation between good attendance and good schoolwork and results of continual absences.      

            6 times - a letter stating this fact will be sent to the parents.  A conference will be held with the student and the principal.  The attendance policy and consequences of further absences will be discussed.  The classroom teacher will no longer give make-up work to the student and will give "O" grades for work missed during future class absences.

            8 times - After 8 absences from a class the student will be dropped from the class and receive no credit.

            Under normal circumstances for the attendance policy, excused absences will be counted as stated below.

            1.  Participation in school sponsored activities with make-up work completed ahead of time (WILL NOT BE COUNTED AS AN ABSENCE)

            2.  Any absence for illness which can be verified by a doctor's statement. (NORMALLY WILL BE COUNTED AS ONE ABSENCE)

            3.  A family emergency, e.g., death in family, critical illness in family, etc. (WILL NOT BE COUNTED AS AN ABSENCE)

            4.  Hunting, fishing, skiing, shopping trips, family vacations, etc.  (WILL COUNT AS ONE ABSENCE for EACH day missed)

            5.  Church youth trips (WILL COUNT AS ONE ABSENCE PER TRIP PER SEMESTER)
